'Ready Or Not' - Joe's Take

2019 I 18+ I 95mins I Dir: Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillet

A bride's wedding night takes a sinister turn when her eccentric new in-laws force her to take part in a terrifying game.

The premise certainly sounds ridiculous and the good news is - the film knows so. Ready or Not operates in a sweet spot between horrific and humorous by being completely self aware and using its premise and genre to its advantage.

There's something a little strange about the film and it's characters before the violence begins. Spending a large chunk of the films screen time with a group of inexperienced and indecisive killers does work to serve for some hilarious moments. My only slight gripe with the film is that it does occasionally undercut the horror with humour more effectively than the other way around. This does create a much lighter film than I was expecting but it does ultimately add to it's charm and feels very re-watchable.

Samara Weaving is great as a bride hiding away from the murderous family and the film does a great job of playing against the stereotypes by having her completely hold her own and become more and more determined as the film progresses.

A tongue in cheek gore-fest that's just all round good fun.
